Picture, if you can, a writer of 20 books, “Roop” Digest’s owner, Jang’s Adbee Section Editor, Novelist, Poet, Anthologist, and Short Story Writer! She is no one but Ms. Sultana Meher, a dame legend of literature.

Friday, August 27, 2004, was the night when bookish personalities of Southern California get together to grace the evening dedicated for this literary persona. The Event was an efforts from Mr. Irfan Murtaza, Mr. Mohammad Kalam, Mr. Asif Syed, and Mr. Fahim Sethi of Urdu Writer Society of Los Angeles.

Prominent poets Mr. Hamid Amrohi (Chicago) and Ms. Mona Shahab (Maryland) were invited to commend the ceremony and Ms. Sultana Meher’s books Sukhenwar “Fifth” and Gufti “Second”. The evening started at 9 pm after refreshments offered by Urdu Writers Society.

Mr. Irfran Murtaza, host of the night, started with words for Ms. Sultana Meher and her contribution for literature and affirmed if history is written, her name will be among top five. Local poets Mr. Asad Ullha Hussaini Chakkar, Mr. Zia Khan, Mr. Khalid Khawaja, and Mr. Mohammad Aslam paid homage to Ms. Sultan Meher with their poetries. Mr. Iqbal Ibrahim also contributed his encomium speech to the night.

An award ceremony was arranged after a break. Urdu Writers Society awarded the principal of the night for her decades of contribution to literature, Urdu Times Chief Bureau, Mr. Zafar Abbas for his community contributions and commitments, and to the excellency Mr. Waqar Ali Khan of SafeerePakistan for his role in media for the community. Key figures Dr. Sohail Masood and Mr. Wakil awarded the personalities of the evening. Urdu Writers Society also presented a check for $1000.00 to Ms. Sultan Meher.

Local poets of the evening also paid their contribution to the Excellency Ms. Sultan Meher in poetry and verses. Contributors included MR. Ali, Mr. Saeed Khan, Mr. Arham Makhdoom, Mr. Iqbal Zaidi, Mr. Zia Khan, Mr. Syed Hassan, Mr. Shamim, Ms. Atia Niazi, Mr. Wasiul Hassan Naqqash, Ms. Aasifa Nishat, Mr. Majeed Akhtar, Mr. Khalid Khwaja, Ms. Mona Shahab (Mary Land ), and Mr. Hamid Amrohi (Chicago).

One can’t deny the fact if the evening was called a marvelous contribution to the literature where prominent figures were together under one roof for one and each other.
